halfway day

today is halfway day at Pierce School in Brookline MA.
What does this mean?

1. the school year is exactly halfway over
2. you get a new homework folder because about halfway through the year your folder is already pretty beat up
3. you get to wear half-and-half outfits. for instance, you can wear pajama bottoms and regular tops, one each of two pairs of sneakers, get a pony tail on half of your head, etc. see below for correct execution of this sartorial imperative.
4. you get to give half a dollar to a worthy cause. pretty cool for first graders. orla brought two quarters. i forgot to see if she knew that a quarter was half of a half dollar. on halfway day....
5. hearts are breaking all over the hancock compound. orla is halfway through first grade. pretty soon she will be getting married. they grow up so fast.
